Search ends for surviving trekkers

Nepal Annapurna: Search ends for surviving trekkers

Rescue teams in Nepal say that there are now no trekkers left stranded after completing their search for survivors of a devastating Himalayan storm.
The focus now is on recovering bodies buried in the snow, a collected from a government spokesman.
It is unclear how many people may still be missing in the country's worst-ever trekking disaster.
At least 39 people are known to have died, and nearly 400 people have been rescued from the Annapurna trail.
It is the fifth day that Nepalese army and private helicopters have been searching the trail.

Officials say the rescue effort grew harder on Sunday because of worsening weather.
Many survivors are severely frostbitten

The BBC's Andrew North in Kathmandu says that in addition to finding bodies, the authorities are eager to improve the flow of information on those caught up in the disaster.
There are currently three different lists of the dead and survivors, being run by the army, the home ministry and Nepal's trekking association, and some people may have been counted twice. The authorities say they now want to create a single list.

Nepalese, Japanese, Israeli, Canadian, Indian, Slovak, Vietnamese and Polish trekkers are said to be among the dead.
Many survivors have been left with severe frostbite and will have to have limbs amputated.

A trekking expert told the BBC that the storm, which struck on Wednesday, was the worst in a decade, and saw up to 1.8m (5.9ft) of snowfall in 12 hours.

The Annapurna Circuit?

  • Roughly 241km (150 miles), takes around three weeks to complete
  • Described as "the best long distance trek in the world"
  • Known as the "apple pie" circuit due to the baked goods offered by tea houses along the route
  • Ascends to 5,416m (17,776ft) at the Thorung La Pass
  • Opened to tourists in 1977 after conflicts between guerrillas and the Nepalese army were resolved
  • Circuit passes Mount Annapurna, world's 10th highest mountain and one of the most dangerous.

The latest on the Ebola Insurgency

EBOLA INSURGENCY

This week's revelation that two Dallas nurses contracted Ebola from the first patient diagnosed with the virus in the U.S. realized the fears of public health officials and sparked new questions over the government's ability to respond to the disease.

Here's a glance at new Ebola coverage from Friday:
President Obama will name former White House official Ron Klain to serve as "Ebola czar" to oversee the government's handling of the virus.

Klain, who previously served as chief of staff for Vice President Joe Biden and for Vice President Al Gore, will report directly to Lisa Monaco, the president's homeland security adviser, and national security adviser Susan Rice, the White House said.

Nurse "very fatigued" but "in good spirits"

Texas hospital releases tearful video of Ebola-infected nurse
The director of infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health said Friday that doctors "fully intend" to have infected nurse Nina Pham "walk out of this hospital."

Overnight, Texas Health Presbyterian released an emotional video of Pham before she was transferred to the NIH in Maryland to continue her treatment for the disease.

Also, another Dallas patient was to be tested for Ebola, a hospital spokesman said Friday.

The spokesman of Baylor University Medical Center, Craig Civale said the patient screened positive for the virus but stressed that that could mean many things. The screening includes whether a person has been to West Africa and has a fever.

The patient was transferred for further tests to Texas Health Presbyterian, the hospital where Thomas Eric Duncan, the first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S., received treatment and died last week.

Ebola scare at Pentagon?
A woman who had recently traveled to Africa vomited in a Pentagon parking lot Friday morning and was taken to a Virginia hospital, the Defense Department said.

Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. Tom Crosson said in a statement that Pentagon Police officers found the woman just after 9 a.m. She told first responders that she had recently visited Africa.

It was reperted that the woman was on a bus taking people from the Pentagon to a change-of-command ceremony for the commandant of the Marine Corps in downtown Washington when she said she felt sick and asked to get off the bus. The woman worked for a contractor that does business with the Pentagon.

The bus and its passengers were being held and an entrance to the Pentagon was closed.

Inova Health System spokesman Tony Raker said in a statement that the patient was immediately isolated at Inova Fairfax Hospital and was undergoing triage in consultation with the county health department. An evaluation would determine whether the patient meets the criteria to be tested for Ebola.

U.N. admits bungling response to outbreak
A draft internal World Health Organization document obtained by The Associated Press reveals mistakes the U.N. health agency made in responding to the outbreak in West Africa.

Health officials trying to get ahead
Texas officials asked the remaining 75 health care workers who had contact with Duncan to sign legal documents agreeing not to go to any public places or use mass transit.

Public confidence in CDC declines dramatically
Americans' faith in the agency charged with protecting the homeland from the outbreak has dropped sharply since the crisis emerged.

A CBS News Poll has found that positive assessment of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declined dramatically, with only 37 percent of respondents saying the CDC is doing an excellent or good job -- down from 60 percent in a May 2013 Gallup poll.

Cruise ship passenger monitored
Ebola concerns now stretch from the United States to Central America. A Carnival cruise was on hold Friday morning off the coast of Belize. A passenger may have handled bodily fluids from Duncan. She works at the hospital in Dallas, where Duncan died last week. The worker is in isolation but shows no symptoms.

What should Ebola health care workers wear?

Suiting up for safety in Ebola protective gear
Federal and state health officials are trying to determine how to more effectively keep health care workers safe. The director of the Center for Disaster Medicine at New York Medical College told CBS News that many hospitals are wrestling with what type of gear to provide to their medical staff.

4 in Spain get test results
The Spanish government said Friday that the first round of tests came back negative for four people suspected of having the virus.

Search expands in Ohio
The CDC expanded its search for people who may have had contact with infected nurse Amber Vinson when she traveled from Dallas to Ohio last weekend on a commercial flight while becoming ill with the virus.

Political blame game over Ebola funding
With voters going to the polls in less than three weeks, Democrats and Republicans are trading charges over which party has been the better champion for the CDC and the NIH.

Fishermen finds angry sea lion in net

Chaos ensues as the men turn large pinniped loose on the deck; man is flung like a ragdoll, and dog gets too close for comfort before mammal is coaxed off boat.

A commercial fisherman aboard a foreign vessel received quite a surprise when they discovered a large and angry sea lion in their net.
In the accompanying footage, which began to circulate on the Internet on Tuesday, one of the fishermen, while trying to open the net to release the sea lion, is grabbed by the sleeve and flung judo-style across the deck

The fishermen give the sea lion a wide berth after that happens, while trying to figure out what to do, but a dog rushes in and receives a warning nip by the giant mammal.
The sea lion, for whatever reason, is reluctant to leave its new pals and their boat full of fish.

Ultimately, however, one of the fishermen grabs a powerful hose and uses it to persuade the animal to the edge of the deck and, presumably, off the boat.
This undoubtedly is not the first time a sea lion has been hauled up in a net.

Sea lions are voracious predators and they’re known to swim into nets full of fish as the nets are being closed, devouring as many fish as possible, and rushing out of the net just before it’s too late.
This particular sea lion, which does not look to have missed many meals, must have merely gotten careless.

100 Armed Mythical Sea Creature found in Singapore

A mythical Sea Creature With 100 Arms Caught By a 54 year old Avid fisherman

A Singapore fisherman, Ong Han Boon, is trying to identify an unusual sea creature he reeled in with up to 100 tentacle-like appendages.

Ong Han Boon, 54, said he caught the strange creature while fishing for lunch recently on the island of Sentosa and he was "completely flummoxed" by the animal he found on the other end of his line.
The avid fisherman caught this mysterious sea creature at his favourite fishing spot on the island Sentosa. And thinks that it’s not even from this world, claiming that it’s an alien or mutant.

"I've had quite a few odd things from come out of the ocean but I have never seen anything like this before in my life. It had all these arms waving around," Boon said.
He said: “I spotted the line going up and down, and feeling a bit peckish I got quite excited as I hauled it in. But when I pulled it out of the water I was completely flummoxed by what I was looking at.

I’ve had quite a few odd things from come out of the ocean but I have never seen anything like this before in my life. It had all these arms waving around. I thought it looked like an alien or some kind of mutant.”

The unknown species resembles an octopus but appears to have up to 100 moving tentacle-like arms, however, so far, no one has been able to identify the creature. It’s not the first time a strange sea creature has been spotted.
